CHAPTER TEN

The aftermath of the battle was a strange, surreal thing. The adrenaline that had sustained me through the long, desperate hours of fighting drained away, leaving me shaky and exhausted. But beneath the bone-deep weariness was a sense of triumph, of relief so profound it brought tears to my eyes.

We had done it. Against all odds, against an enemy that had seemed invincible, we had emerged victorious. Ravenswood was free. The curse that had haunted it for so long finally broken.

I observed the determined faces of those who fought and risked for this moment. Elsa, her face streaked with tears of joy and relief, Nathan, his eyes shining with pride and love, Madam Z, her silver hair glinting in the fading light of the setting sun.

And Elliot. His ghostly form shimmered at the edge of my vision, a reminder of the man I had lost, the love that still bound us together across the veil of death.

I took a step towards him, my hand reaching out instinctively. But before I could touch him, before I could speak the words that welled up in my throat, he faded away, his spirit disappearing into the ether.

I felt a pang of loss, a hollow ache in my chest. But I understood. Elliot’s time with me was fleeting, a gift that I couldn’t cling to forever. He came to me when I needed him most, and guided me through the darkest hours of my life. Now it was time for me to release him and move on.

I felt a hand on my shoulder, warm and solid. I turned to see Nathan standing beside me, his eyes soft with understanding.

“You okay?” he asked, his voice low and gentle.

I nodded, a small smile tugging at the corners of my mouth. “Yeah. I’m okay. Just...processing, I guess.”

He pulled me into his arms, his embrace a shelter from the chaos and confusion of the world. I leaned into him, breathing in the comforting scent of his skin, the steady thrum of his heartbeat against my cheek.

“I’m so proud of you,” he murmured, his lips brushing against my hair. “You were incredible out there. Fearless. Strong. Like a true Guardian.”

I looked up at him, my eyes searching his face, tracing the lines of his jaw, the curve of his mouth. “I couldn’t have done it without you,” I said, my voice thick with emotion. “You were my rock, my anchor. I don’t know what I would have done without you.”

His hand cupped my cheek, his thumb brushing away a stray tear. “You’ll never have to find out,” he promised, his voice low and fervent. “I’m here, Clara. Always.”

I leaned up and brushed my lips against his, a sweet kiss that held the promise of something more. But even as I melted into his embrace, even as I felt the stirrings of desire and longing in the pit of my stomach, I couldn’t shake the feeling of unease, of guilt that crept up my spine.

I pulled away, my eyes downcast, my heart heavy with confusion and uncertainty.
